Holding the proud title of the oldest continually operating Mexican restaurant in the city since 1932, La Fonda On Main specializes in classic San Antonio Tex-Mex and traditional interior Mexican cuisine.
Walking onto the lush, shaded outdoor patio instantly transports you away from the busy city streets. The atmosphere is vibrant and deeply rooted in local history.
We swung by recently for a plate of their legendary enchiladas, and the deep, earthy red chile sauce tasted incredibly authentic.

However, because this historic spot is so universally loved, brace yourself for a tough time finding parking and potentially long wait times during busy weekend dinner rushes.

It remains my favorite in the city, consistently delivering exceptional flavor and quality. I always order the Tex-Mex Deluxe, which never disappoints. I also recommend the frozen cactus margarita. You should make a reservation in advance.

Cozy and welcoming spot for classic Mexican food. The dishes came out warm and fresh, and we especially loved the variety of salsas — a few were outstanding! The only real downside is parking, which can be a challenge since the restaurant sits right inside the busy Market Square area, especially during peak hours.

The restaurant has a lot of decorations, it was fun to walk and look around.
There’s also option live music, they walk around and will ask if we want music.
The food was good. The beef was tasty and juicy, but the pork was dry and a bit lacking in flavor. The tortillas were fresh and delicious.
Make sure to visit the bakery. We only tried the pineapple empanadas, it was amazing. The other options also looked delicious.

For a classic institution in the El Mercado, it does not sit on its laurels as a well located venue in a tourist trap. The staff are welcoming and the food is awesome with generous portions. Beyond that, however, the ambiance is amazing- a burst of color in every direction, like being at a never ending fiesta. Also, the best Mexican Bakery I have been to outside of (or inside of?) Mexico!

Starting off with the atmosphere…..gorgeous. Visually eye catching. I sat at the bar where I was served by Benji making my cocktails and Lorena taking my food order. Both amazing. Benji made very tasty and satisfying drinks. Lorena gave me great food suggestions according to my taste preference. I was not disappointed. I felt very spoiled on my visit. The attentiveness they both provided me will definitely keep me coming back.

Food, drinks and service were fantastic. Had the volcanes with cochinita to start which was huge. Tacos Azulejos and Camarones Al Ajillo for main course. Lalo margarita during the meal and carajillo to end it. All were delicious and well plated. Anibal provided superb service. Only complaint is the ribeye on the tacos was medium well to well done so if you like a more tender steak ask for medium rare or medium.

This OG spot is a must-eat destination for anyone in or visiting San Antonio. My wife and I have been here twice now. Her family would attend the San Antonio Stock Show and stop by this spot as a tradition. A couple eating last night said, “46 years ago we ate here on our first date.” The restaurant should be recognized as a historic location. Cheers to the staff, chefs, and team.
