1. Freeman Coliseum

Address: 3201 E Houston St
Contact: (210) 226-1177 x278 (Derrick Howard, Executive Director)
Hours: By appointment.
If you’re looking for that massive, high-octane arena feel, this is the place. The Freeman Coliseum is a huge space that handles those giant touring acts perfectly, but it still manages to feel surprisingly close-knit once the lights go down.
One thing I noticed is how the air conditioning actually keeps up with the crowd, which is a lifesaver in the Texas heat. Plus, the floor space is big enough that you’re not constantly getting elbowed while trying to dance.
If you’re seeing shows performed by professional dance classes in San Antonio, you’ll appreciate how the vast floor gives performers all the room they need.
It feels like a professional operation, which makes sense since Derrick Howard, the Executive Director, keeps the place running smoothly.
One thing to watch out for is the exit strategy, as it can take a while to get out of the parking lot after a sold-out show.
Came here for the first time to see Grupo Intocable and it was a blast! The area is huge but also intimate! Even if you’re at nose bleed seats you’re able to feel as you’re up close and personal! The area was clean and had many areas to eat.

This was a wonderful concert venue. It is smaller so it feels more intimate. The lines to get inside were real quick and organized. I was surprised the price of our tickets compared to how close we were to the stage. I highly recommend section 11. They had some awesome seats so close to the stage. It was rather chilly in there. I see old reviews complain about the AC. I think they fixed it lol.

2. Majestic Theatre

Address: 224 E Houston St.
Contact: 210-226-5700
Hours: Monday to Friday: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Stepping into the Majestic Theatre feels like traveling back in time. This historically significant, Spanish Mediterranean-style auditorium provides attendees with a highly elegant visual backdrop for seated performances.
I recently attended a beautiful acoustic set here, and the specialized architectural acoustics carried the unamplified sounds all the way to my seat in the upper balcony.
The tiered seating is a huge plus because you never have to worry about a tall person blocking your view.
I especially loved the central downtown location, which allows attendees to easily access fantastic nearby restaurants before or after the event. Booking a show here guarantees a highly memorable atmosphere for all ticket holders.
Just keep in mind that the seating is pretty tight if you’re on the taller side. Also, the lobby gets really crowded during intermission, so getting a drink can be a bit of a mission.
Phenomenal venue..parking at the end of the block . Very trained staff. Get the full dinner experience.
This trip I saw the Movie “Blade Runner” with a full Ensemble playing the Soundtrack live. Was exhilarating to experience the live music and watch the big screen at the same time. Be sure to catch a inside seat as the middle isles are wider for your exiting. Wonderful experience.

The Outsiders was a terrific musical. Good music, good lyrics, the voices were great and the duets we fabulous. Staying was also very good– very creative ways to change up locale. Highly recommend. Always love the Majestic. Orchestra/ music is always outstanding. Management of lines (restrooms) is the best I’ve seen

3. Fitzgerald’s Bar & Live Music Venue

Website: http://fitzrockssa.com/
Address: 437 Mccarty Road
Contact: (210) 607-7007
Hours: Wednesday: 2:00 PM – 2:00 AM, Thursday to Saturday: 8:00 PM – 2:00 AM
Local staple Fitzgerald’s Bar & Live Music Venue provides a dedicated, intimate stage equipped with in-house sound that allows attendees to experience energetic performances up close.
The compact floor plan ensures that fans feel a direct connection with the musicians, creating a vibrant atmosphere that larger arenas often struggle to replicate.
After wrapping up a piano lesson in San Antonio, heading over to this local favorite offers a great way to study professional live instrumentation in a relaxed setting.
Attendees can also easily grab a drink and socialize on the attached outdoor patio to cool down away from the loud music.
However, there’s limited indoor square footage. This heavily restricts the maximum number of tickets sold, which means you have to book early if you’re looking to watch a highly anticipated act.
A great bar for some drinks and live music. We’ve come here 5 or 6 times to see tribute bands and it’s always a good time with a good rock vibe. Here now watching Godsmack and Metallica tribute bands with drinks and food!

4. The Rock Box

Website: https://therockboxsa.com/
Address: 1223 E Houston St
Contact: 210-803-2101, [email protected]
Hours: Tuesday & Friday 7:00 PM – 2:00 AM, Wednesday, Thursday & Saturday 8:00 PM – 2:00 AM
I’m a big fan of how The Rock Box gives you options depending on the night. You might find a heavy metal show inside or a more laid-back vibe in the expansive backyard area.
The sound system here is seriously impressive and handles heavy bass without making everything sound like static. The open floor plan is perfect if you like to move around and find the best sightline during a high-energy performance.
There are also plenty of bars scattered around, so you never have to wait very long to get a cold beer between sets.
However, if they have two bands playing different stages at the same time, the sound can bleed over a bit between the rooms. Still, it’s a fantastic spot for discovering new touring acts that are just about to blow up.
Had a GREAT time watching Dirty Honey last night. Great GREAT up-and-coming band. These guys ROCK!! … And the crowd really responded to them. If this venue can continue to bring in acts like this, I’ll be back many more times. Cold beer, great music. Awesome!

Caught Emery at The Rock Box and they were incredible to see again! I have to give a huge shout-out to Good Terms — the band in my video and pics. They are insanely talented and their breakdowns really set them apart. The energy they brought lit up the whole room. The venue itself had a great vibe, solid sound, and friendly staff. All around an amazing night

5. 502 Bar

Website: https://502bar.com/
Address: 502 Embassy Oaks
Contact: 210-257-8125
Hours: Daily: 3:00 PM – 2:00 AM
Catching an indie act at 502 Bar is always a treat. The management cleverly combines a purpose-built corner stage with excellent room acoustics, offering an optimized sound environment and a relaxed viewing experience.
The specific L-shaped layout and acoustic treatments allow for remarkably clear and high-quality sound mixing throughout the entire space.
Drinks-wise, there’s attentive bar staff that ensures smooth service, keeping guests highly satisfied with their craft beers and expertly mixed cocktails.
This casual neighborhood setup remains a phenomenal option for enjoying smaller acoustic performances in the city.
But because the location fosters such an intimate environment, there’s limited seating capacity. Late-arriving attendees may have to stand for the entire duration of the event once all tables are claimed.
Love it when I can make it out to this venue to catch a show or just to hang out for a bit. The setup is pretty dope and the sound is amazing. Also, the staff are awesome all around. It’s been too long. I miss you 502 and can’t wait to visit again soon. 🖤

502 Bar is hands down one of the best spots in town! The food was absolutely delicious—far beyond what you’d expect from a live music venue. The concert production and entertainment were top-notch, with great sound and a fun, energetic atmosphere. What really made the night special was the bar staff—every bartender was friendly, attentive, and provided exceptional service from start to finish. Can’t wait to come back for another show!
