Shavano Park Tennis Club is a fantastic spot for anyone looking to get into the game. It functions as a private club but remains very welcoming to the local community.

They offer a great mix of competitive USTA leagues and casual social gatherings for every skill level. When we visited last month, the thoughtful spacing between the nine lighted courts stood out to us immediately.

Beyond the courts, the facility features a fully equipped clubhouse and a relaxing outdoor fireplace area. While non-members can participate in professional lessons and clinics, you will need a membership for regular court time.

You also have to contend with the unpredictable Texas heat, since there are no indoor courts available.

Pros

  • Highly active competitive league environment
  • Comprehensive year-round junior and adult programs
  • Accessible monthly membership pricing

Cons

  • Full court access requires membership

I’ve been a member of Shavano Park Tennis Club for years, and I can’t say enough good things about it. Mike and Soeurertte run an exceptional establishment. The club and courts are impeccably maintained, with every detail taken care of. The courts are simply perfect. The staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming, making every visit enjoyable. Having been a member of many clubs over the years, I can confidently say this is one of the best! Highly recommend.

Budget-conscious athletes will find excellent value at The Tennis Park at Whispering Oaks thanks to its very affordable membership model.

Monthly fees start at remarkably low levels, and the club actively encourages non-members to join its programs for a small fee.

The park-like setting is nestled within a quiet residential neighborhood, creating a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere.

Their dedicated coaching staff also runs great year-round instruction for everyone from beginners to advanced league players. They even offer pickleball if you want to try something different.

Just keep in mind that the facility has only six courts. This small number can occasionally make it a bit difficult to book a prime-time evening slot during the busiest seasons of the year.

Pros

  • Highly budget-friendly monthly fees
  • Non-members can participate and reserve courts
  • Strong family-oriented community setting
  • Professional year-round coaching staff

Cons

  • Limited court availability during peak hours

Customer Reviews:

The coaches are positive

Karen and the team at The Tennis Park have been amazing since our daughter started lessons there in 6th grade.   She bows plays on her HS JV team.  The coaches are positive and the kids enjoy the sessions

Green Tree Tennis Club is a fantastic choice for families because it offers a perfect mix of racquet sports and recreational fun.

Since the facility is located on eight acres of beautiful wooded land, you get a peaceful park environment without any urban crowding.

A local parent told us that the summer camps are a big hit because the coaches make training feel like a blast.

The club is also very successful in the local sports scene, having won many city championships. They even host a popular annual tournament that draws in hundreds of players.

Just keep in mind that the heavy focus on general recreation and pool events might not suit everyone.

Because of these extra amenities, the membership fees are also higher than those of your average open-access tennis park.

Pros

  • 7 lighted courts alongside swimming pools
  • Spacious and relaxing 8-acre wooded layout
  • Year-round youth engagement and summer camps
  • Proven USTA competitive championship record

Cons

  • Less appealing for strictly tennis-only athletes
  • Higher membership dues than entry-level clubs

Customer Reviews:

Great for our family of five

Green Tree has been great for our family of five. We just recently got into tennis and Courtney and crew have been wonderful and very welcoming. They offer lots of opportunities to get involved and play! I would definitely recommend to anyone on the fence about where to join.

Athletes who want a top-tier experience will love the facilities at The Club At Sonterra. This massive complex features 31 lit courts, along with excellent golf and fitness amenities.

Their certified professionals run numerous group clinics and in-house leagues for all skill levels. One of the best parts is how easily you can transition from a match to a relaxing session in the steam room or a nice meal at the clubhouse.

There are even dedicated programs for kids and swim teams to keep the whole family busy.

However, gaining access to this high-end lifestyle requires a significant financial commitment. Some visitors we spoke with have also complained about frustrating service issues at the front desk when trying to book their sessions.

Pros

  • Full access to premium golf and fitness amenities
  • Professional coaching via certified instructors
  • Highly active family and youth programming

Cons

  • Requires substantial country club initiation fees
  • Reports of confusing guest check-in procedures

Customer Reviews:

Tennis courts are top quality

My wife and I loved this place for years. Much has changed over time, but the members here are the best. They finally updated the fitness center in 2019 and it’s much better. Tennis courts are top quality and the pool is nice but a bit dated. Fun 4th of July party and the famous Taste of the Northside is here as well. Overall, great club.

Because the club continuously modernizes its facilities, you can enjoy upgraded fitness centers and lovely social spaces. There is a very engaged community here, thanks to the regular clinics and leagues that encourage networking.

Pros

  • Meticulously maintained tennis and pickleball courts
  • Comprehensive resort-style fitness and spa amenities
  • Strong emphasis on social play and networking
  • Year-round clinics suited for various skill levels

Customer Reviews:

The courts were in really good condition

I loved it there because during a school tennis tournament, the courts were in really good condition. They also had more than 10 courts. I really recommend going to this place if you live close to it.
