We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Ingredient Quality: We paid close attention to the freshness of the bread and the grade of meats used. Shops that bake their loaves daily or slice proteins in-house scored very highly on our final list.

Menu Variety: A stellar deli needs to accommodate different tastes and specific dietary restrictions. We looked for menus offering classic cold cuts alongside inventive vegetarian creations.

Value for Money: We compared the physical size and heft of each sub against its retail price. Generous portions that actually fill you up without draining your wallet earned extra points during our assessment.

Customer Service: A welcoming environment completely changes how you experience a casual lunch outing. Establishments with friendly staff members and efficient ordering systems naturally stood out to us.

Local Reputation: We prioritized joints with a proven track record of community loyalty and consistent foot traffic. Spots recognized as neighborhood institutions clearly know how to keep people coming back.

Looking for a satisfying midday meal or a hefty hoagie to conquer a serious craving? When you need a break from dining at your favorite Indian restaurant or grabbing sweets at local cake shops, a handcrafted sub hits the spot perfectly.

Address: 13210 Huebner Rd

Contact: (210) 764-0602

Hours: Sunday – Wednesday, 9:00 AM – 8:00 PM; Thursday – Saturday, 9:00 AM – 9:00 PM

Tucked inside a modest convenience store, Gino’s Deli is a beloved neighborhood institution that delivers a highly authentic New York-style deli experience.

The owner was actually trained in Brooklyn to master the techniques needed to produce top-tier subs. This has made them incredibly famous for their award-winning Philly cheesesteak.

I stopped by last Tuesday to try that famous cheesesteak myself, and the melted cheese pulling apart with every bite was absolutely divine.

They even offer a rare guarantee that perfectly demonstrates their absolute confidence in the food, alongside roughly thirty different menu items.

Keep in mind that some customers occasionally notice smaller portions of meat relative to the generous pile of fresh vegetables. I was also slightly disappointed when my original sandwich felt a bit under-seasoned upon delivery.

Pros

  • Nationally recognized and award-winning menu
  • Unique customer satisfaction guarantee
  • Wide variety of classic and original builds
  • Highly welcoming and friendly service

Cons

  • Certain menu items lack strong seasoning
  • Smaller meat portions on some subs

Perfect Taste Combo

Handsdown the best sandwich shop in San Antonio.  The whole family enjoyed thier order.  Bread was fresh and ingredients were perfectly grilled/melted to make the perfect taste combo.  It’s out of the way from where we live but will go out of our way to come back in the future!

Accommodating And Helpful

When we walked in, we were presumably greeted by the owner of the shop, he informed us first time customers get free chips and a drink. He was friendly, accommodating and helpful. The sandwiches, were fantastic. A place known for their Philly cheesesteak, I got the Rabbi Scott, and added serranos and habaneros for extra spice. It was a divinely delicious sandwich and the cooks were friendly as well. All in all, it lived up to its reputation and will become a staple anytime I crave a hot sub.

Contact: (210) 684-6555

Hours: Monday – Friday, 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM; Saturday, 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM; Sunday, Closed

Generations of locals know exactly where to go for a massive, shareable lunch. Operating since 1975, Zito’s Deli is a family-owned establishment that has built a strong heritage on baking fresh homemade bread every single day.

Decades of operation have cemented them as a trusted destination for hearty appetites.

Their absolute standout item is a proprietary creation loaded with meats and an exclusive signature Italian dressing. This colossal sub is specifically marketed as large enough for two people to split comfortably.

Their menu also has a reliable lineup of traditional roast beef and pastrami options that ensure you always get a familiar, comforting bite.

However, I was frustrated by the inadequate food temperatures and minor cleanliness issues in the dining area during a busy lunch rush.

Pros

  • Long-standing local reputation since 1975
  • Generously portioned signature sandwiches
  • Fresh bread baked in-house daily
  • Consistent house dressing flavor profile

Cons

  • Occasional food temperature inconsistencies
  • Unclean dining area

Enjoy Coming Here

I work in the area so I enjoy coming here for lunch. Their soup of the day is always delicious. At this location I definitely recommend trying the philly Italian. It comes with a side of au jus that is so savory. It’s a little messy but amazing. Also, I’ve never known a deli/sandwich shop to give you a side of beans. Pleasant change up. Definitely check it out if you’re in the area.

Very Good Sandwiches

Really great sandwich shop in Babcock.  We came on Tuesday,  early afternoon,  and it was very chill.  You order at the counter – they took our order,  we grabbed our drinks and chips,  and sat down.  Very good sandwiches 🥪!!

They serve it with a little thing of beans.  So good.  We’ll definitely come back!!

Finding a cozy neighborhood spot that nails the basics is always a fantastic discovery for a quick bite. Beacon Hill Market & Deli is a charming eatery that serves up hot meatball subs and classic turkey clubs that hit all the right savory notes.

The menu caters heavily to traditional lunch seekers looking for a straightforward, satisfying meal to break up their workday. Their cheesesteaks are best-sellers, coming loaded with melted provolone and grilled onions for a deeply comforting flavor profile.

You can easily grab a quick drink and a side of chips to complete your order.

Unfortunately, I found that the cured meats and heavy sauces made my sub excessively salty. The very limited outdoor seating was also slightly annoying.

Pros

  • Comforting selection of classic subs
  • Relaxed neighborhood dining atmosphere
  • Quick and straightforward ordering process
  • Convenient hours for midday lunches

Cons

  • Certain items are noticeably overly salty
  • Very limited outdoor dine-in seating available

Huge And Delicious

Great little deli hidden gem in the Beacon Hill neighborhood. Small inside with a couple of tables outside to sit at. Great menu. I got an Italian sub with the hot pepper jelly and highly recommend it. On another visit I got the buffalo chicken sandwich which was huge and delicious. My friend got a Philly cheesesteak, also fab!

Everything Is Great

Fantastic place to get a sandwich. I know it’s a seasonal sandwich, but the Holiday Hoedown is something I wish I could have in my life year round. Everything about it is great. You can’t go wrong with stuffing in your sandwich. Really makes me want to go back and try more of their menu. Friendly staff.

4. The Wicked Wich

Address: 825 Fredericksburg Rd

Contact: (210) 929-7693

Hours: Monday – Saturday, 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM; Sunday, Closed

Walking into The Wicked Wich immediately hits you with fun, nostalgic rock and roll energy. It truly serves as a fantastic local hangout that proudly displays neighborhood art.

They focus heavily on constructing massive, overstuffed hoagies that feature highly creative and bold flavor combinations. Every single order highlights freshly sliced meats and high-quality local produce prepared in strictly limited daily quantities.

A good friend of mine raved about their spicy Italian build, and after taking a huge bite last weekend, I completely understood the hype.

I also loved that the small, curated menu allows the kitchen to maintain excellent efficiency while executing its unique concepts flawlessly.

On the downside, I was frustrated by the communication challenges with the front counter staff regarding an order mistake.

Pros

  • Freshly prepared ingredients and house-made sauces
  • Unique and highly creative menu concepts
  • Fun, nostalgic brand identity
  • Highly filling and generously stacked portions

Cons

  • Occasional mistakes with order accuracy

Incredible Sandwiches

This place is so good. Quick service with friendly and helpful employees, laid-back casual atmosphere, and absolutely incredible sandwiches. Some of my faves are the Ceza, the Reuben, and the Goliath, but today I went with the Webmy Stack. Honestly, this sandwich was still on my mind all day after I ate it. Definitely falls easily into the weekly rotation of places to eat. Good prices too.

Exceeded Our Expectations

The boyfriend and I came to this place on a whim since we were out and about. This place exceeded our expectations! I never review places but this sandwich shop changed my mind on that. We saved money by ordering the $15 sandwich and split it between the two of us and it still satisfied our hunger! So it’s quite the money saver as well without sacrificing quality. We’ll definitely be regulars from now on.

5. The Brown Bag Sandwich Shop

Address: 11035 Wetmore Rd

Located conveniently near the airport, The Brown Bag Sandwich Shop caters perfectly to travelers and busy professionals needing a fast meal.

They’ve operated successfully since 1985 by focusing heavily on fresh, homemade gourmet provisions rather than standard fast food.

The extensive menu allows patrons to build their own custom subs using a wide variety of savory proteins and cheeses. If you need something warm, they also offer fantastic combination meals featuring piping hot soups and crisp salads.

The hearty portions ensure you leave fully satisfied before catching a train or heading back to the office.

Just be aware that the lunchtime rush can make the ordering process feel incredibly hurried and chaotic.

Pros

  • Highly customizable sandwich options
  • Convenient location for busy travelers
  • Diverse menu including soups and salads
  • Strong local community presence since 1985

Cons

  • Ordering experience often feels rushed

Good Service

I tried the Pita Sandwich and it was really good. The customer service was really good also. The eating area was kept clean. And they also have an outside area to eat in the back. This place has been around for 30 years. I definitely would recommend coming here. The Philly cheesesteak is also really good.

Won’t Be Disappointed

Excellent hidden gem by the airport. Great good and cozy atmosphere. My office used to grab lunch from Brown Bag on the regular back in the 2010s, I passed by them today and was thrilled to see they still carry my regular, the TAS (Turkey Avocado Sprout) sandwich. Stop in and grab lunch to go or dine in. You won’t be disappointed. The deviled eggs are to die for ( no pun intended).
