The 5 Best Pediatric Clinics in San Antonio for Trusted Care

pediatric-clinics-in-san-antonio
We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Accessibility and Scheduling: We sought clinics that offer flexible hours or after-hours triage to accommodate busy parents. A reliable medical home should be available when unexpected fevers spike at night.

Range of Medical Services: Comprehensive care was a major priority during our evaluation process. Facilities that offer in-house labs or integrated behavioral health support save families the hassle of visiting multiple locations.

Financial Flexibility: Healthcare costs can quickly strain a family's budget. We prioritized clinics that accept diverse insurance plans or provide sliding-scale fees for uninsured patients.

Specialized Expertise: Finding a provider with targeted knowledge ensures your child receives tailored guidance. We checked whether the medical staff held specific certifications, such as lactation consulting, or had extensive backgrounds in adolescent care.

Finding the best pediatric clinic in San Antonio can feel tougher than it should when you’re trying to balance cost, convenience, and trust.

Parents need more than a place to handle fevers and school forms. You want a team that listens, explains things clearly, and makes your child feel comfortable.

I put this guide together to help families compare clinics that stand out for accessibility, range of care, and day-to-day practicality.

Whether you’re booking a newborn visit or looking ahead to sports physicals, these are the local options trusted by many parents!

1. CommuniCare Pediatrics – South Clinic

communicare-pediatrics-south-clinic

Website: https://communicaresa.org/

Address: 2316 SE Military Dr

Contact: (210) 233-7000

Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Finding the right pediatric clinic matters when you want more than a quick sick visit.

CommuniCare Pediatrics – South Clinic stands out because it functions as a full healthcare home. Here, they offer medical care, on-site behavioral health support, and even an in-house pharmacy.

I remember taking my nephew here for a routine checkup, and what eased my mind most was being able to handle his prescription in the same building instead of rushing across town afterward.

The clinic also follows The Joint Commission’s safety standards and offers a sliding fee scale, which can make a real difference for families paying out of pocket.

Because it’s a major Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), though, the clinic can feel busy, and appointment flow may move a little slower than at smaller private offices.

It’s also closed on weekends, so this works best for families who want strong daytime support rather than Saturday access.

Pros

  • Accepts Medicaid and most private insurance plans
  • Offers specialized sports physicals and acute care
  • Provides on-site behavioral health services
  • Multilingual staff for diverse patient needs

Cons

  • Closed on Saturdays and Sundays
  • High-volume clinic with potential wait times

2. Southwest Children’s Center

southwest-children-s-center

Website: http://www.southwestchildrenscenter.com/

Address: 5282 Medical Dr # 310

Contact: (210) 614-8687

Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

The service Southwest Children’s Center feels especially reassuring for parents in the newborn stage.

This practice is recognized as a Patient-Centered Medical Home by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), which tells you they take coordinated, long-term care seriously.

What I also appreciate is the extra support for nursing families. For starters, there’s a pediatrician who’s also an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).

They also offer complimentary prenatal consultations so parents can meet the team before the baby arrives.

Their in-house lab is another practical plus because it cuts down on extra errands. I also liked that you could get your child’s asthma care sorted before heading back to daycare.

The trade-off is that certain camps or sports programs come with administrative fees beyond a regular exam, and the office is closed on weekends.

Pros

  • Complimentary prenatal meet-and-greet visits
  • On-site Registered Dietitian for nutritional guidance
  • 24-hour answering service for after-hours needs
  • Performs diagnostic testing directly in the clinic

Cons

  • Closed on Saturdays and Sundays
  • Charges administrative fees for non-covered forms

Customer Reviews

Can’t say enough good things.

Can’t say enough good things about this pediatrician group, especially our very own Dr. Vizuete. She makes us feel comfortable asking anything and never rushed. But really, all of the doctors are knowledgeable, attentive, supportive, and they have guided us through the first few years with our twins. We always find appointments, even on weekends. Blessed to have high quality care.

Dr. Root is the best!

Dr. Root is the best! She is patient, thorough, and always takes time to answer any questions we may have. You can tell that she genuinely cares about her patients and their families (especially us first time parents!!) we are grateful to have her caring for our little one.

3. University Health Dr. Robert L.M. Hilliard Center

university-health-dr-robert-l-m-hilliard-center

Website: https://www.universityhealth.com/

Address: 919 Locke St

Contact: (210) 644-8700

Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

University Health Dr. Robert L.M. Hilliard Center makes a lot of sense for families who want broad specialist support behind their primary care doctor.

As part of South Texas’s academic health system, the clinic connects patients with more than 120 pediatric specialists when extra care is needed.

A friend of mine brings her toddler here, and she has always talked about how smoothly the pediatric team coordinates with the larger University Health network. That kind of backup matters when a simple visit turns into something more complex.

I also like that women’s health services and pediatric care are housed together, which can make scheduling easier for busy parents.

The mobile clinic for neighborhood immunizations is another thoughtful touch, and direct access to neonatology helps families with newborn concerns.

The downside is that there aren’t any in-person weekend hours, so Saturday issues may push you toward a virtual visit or another clinic.

Pros

  • Direct coordination with over 120 pediatric specialists
  • Offers 24/7 on-demand virtual visits
  • Accepts almost all major health insurance plans
  • Provides direct access to neonatology services

Cons

  • No in-person weekend operating hours
  • Weekend issues require virtual or alternative care

Customer Reviews

The pediatric team was absolutely amazing.

The pediatric team was absolutely amazing. Maria was incredibly sweet and so patient with my 4 year old. She took her time and thoroughly went through all of our questions, which made us feel very comfortable and heard.

Yari was also wonderful. She administered the vaccines so gently that my 4-year-old didn’t cry or even flinch. She made him feel calm and comfortable the entire time, which truly means everything to a parent. No parent wants to see their child screaming during vaccinations, and she made the experience as smooth as possible.

Exceptional treatment we receive.

I bring my girls to this clinic. I can sincerely say that I appreciate the exceptional treatment we receive. We feel heard, the staff is great, and the welcoming atmosphere makes my girls feel at ease; they love coming here.

4. A Thru Z Pediatrics

a-thru-z-pediatrics

Website: https://a-zpeds.com/

Address: 7922 Ewing Halsell Dr Ste 360

Contact: (210) 614-7500

Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM; Saturday, 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM

A Thru Z Pediatrics feels built for families who want a child-friendly setting without giving up practical medical support.

The practice offers a dedicated early-care program for newborns, including weight checks and professional lactation support, which can be a relief during those first few exhausting weeks.

I was also impressed by how intentionally kid-focused the space sounds. The bright, themed office and playful carvings are there to make visits less intimidating, and that can really help children who get anxious around doctors.

Beyond routine care, they handle allergy testing and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) evaluations in the office, so you’re not always sent to outside health screening clinics for follow-up services.

Their five local locations also make the practice easier to reach than some smaller clinics.

Still, Saturday appointments are limited to the Medical Center location, and the office is strict about requiring you to bring your insurance card and ID to every visit.

Pros

  • Prioritizes same-day visits for sick children
  • Offers 24-hour triage support via answering service
  • Provides a secure online patient portal
  • Accepts Medicaid and most major private plans

Cons

  • Weekend hours limited to the Medical Center branch
  • Requires insurance and ID cards at every appointment

First time visiting clinic and was more than happy with services we received. It was an absolute pleasure working with Mr. Rockett! My son was a little nervous for his appt, but he was so kind and engaging that my son felt just fine by the end of our visit. 10/10 experience!

5. Cevey Pediatrics

cevey-pediatrics

Website: https://www.ceveypediatrics.com/

Address: 414 W Sunset Rd Ste 105

Contact: (210) 826-0311

Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Closed 12:30 PM – 1:30 PM)

Cevey Pediatrics stands out for parents who want a smaller-feeling office with strong communication.

The practice is led by a former Air Force staff pediatrician with experience at Brooke Army Medical Center, and that background comes through in the clinic’s organized, no-nonsense approach.

One thing I really like is how easy they make everyday contact. Parents can call or text the same number for appointments and questions, and certain concerns can even be handled through telehealth instead of a full office visit.

They also follow the recommended American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) immunization schedule, which may appeal to families who want a more traditional, guideline-based approach.

At the same time, that policy won’t suit parents looking for alternative vaccine schedules. You also need to work around a full lunch-hour closure, and the office does not accept Medicaid or other public assistance plans.

Pros

  • Highly experienced medical assistants on staff
  • Direct after-hours connection to an on-call doctor
  • Thorough breakdown of insurance terms provided online
  • Allows certain video and phone calls as office visits

Cons

  • Doesn’t accept Medicaid or public assistance insurance
  • Office is completely closed during the lunch hour
  • Requires a mandatory credit card authorization on file

Scheduling is always so easy.

Dr Cevey Has been such a great pediatrician for all my kiddos. The office staff are the most helpful and scheduling is always so easy. Never waiting at our scheduled appointments and emergency care is always one phone call away. What I love best about this office is they allocate time every single day for emergencies and so I will never ever hesitate to call and make an appointment if my child needs to be seen urgently. Highly recommend her to the entire San Antonio community!
