We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Service Range: We examined the scope of care at each clinic, focusing on prenatal checkups and postpartum visits. Practices offering comprehensive support through both home births and birthing center deliveries received higher consideration.

Pricing and Packages: Understanding the financial commitment is crucial for expectant parents planning their delivery. We looked into overall delivery package costs, payment plans, and general insurance acceptance policies.

Specialist Approach: A personalized maternity experience often relies on holistic and low-intervention childbirth methods. We prioritized providers who actively tailor their maternal care to align with a family's specific birth preferences.

Location and Accessibility: Expectant mothers need reliable access to their providers throughout their pregnancy journey. We evaluated clinic availability and the option for dedicated home visits to ensure convenient care.

Staff Credentials: Feeling safe requires trusting the professionals handling your maternal care. We verified the presence of certified nurse-midwives and licensed birth professionals with extensive delivery experience.

Pregnancy comes with many decisions, from choosing the right pharmacy for prenatal essentials to selecting a trusted care provider. Finding the best midwife in San Antonio can make a real difference in how supported and confident you feel.

Many expecting mothers look for care that feels personal and attentive, with guidance that continues through labor and postpartum recovery. The right provider offers not just clinical support, but reassurance and clear communication every step of the way.

To help make that search easier, we explored local midwifery practices across San Antonio. We focused on experience, approach to care, and overall patient support.

When we think about out-of-hospital delivery, safety preparation is what matters most. That’s where the Birth Center of San Antonio really shines.

A friend of mine recently delivered with them and felt incredibly reassured knowing the attending staff holds active certifications in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Neonatal Resuscitation.

The center also brings all necessary medical equipment on-site to handle emergencies safely while still maintaining a cozy, home-like atmosphere during labor.

Mothers receive uninterrupted, hands-on assistance right from the active labor phase through the immediate recovery period. Families opting for a home delivery even get the benefit of a full post-delivery cleanup by the midwifery team.

The only significant drawback is their strict 15-minute travel radius requirement for home births, which limits accessibility for families living further out.

Pros

  • Early clinical gender testing
  • Transparent newborn physical exams
  • Reusable medical equipment provided
  • Hands-on lactation support

Cons

  • Strict 15-minute home birth radius
  • Complex deliveries require hospital transfer

She was right by our side the whole step of the way

We could not have been more blessed to have Heather as our midwife. She provided options and always wanted us to feel heard. My pregnancy towards the end came with difficult questions and decisions she was right by our side the whole step of the way. My sons delivery was not as expected and very sudden, and Heather was there in a heartbeat. I had no family available to be with me during my delivery and she made us feel like family and helped me through my most vulnerable time after delivery.

She was the best midwife for us to choose to have a home birth

I’ve been meaning to write this review for some time, as Heather was my midwife for our first born boy. I just haven’t been able to find the words to describe what an amazing experience it was and how she was the best midwife for us to choose to have a home birth.

I am thankful for the care she put into the entire process. Heather was truly invested in the wellbeing of our entire family unit and I never felt like just a patient with her.

2. Birth Experience Midwifery Care

Address: 12915 Jones Maltsberger Rd #600, San Antonio, TX 78247

Hours: Monday to Friday 9:00AM–5:00PM | Available 24/7 on call

What stood out to us most about Birth Experience Midwifery Care is how they remain actively available during the most unpredictable part of pregnancy.

They’re on standby starting two weeks before your expected due date and continuing until two weeks afterward, which really adds a sense of security in that final stretch.

Lead midwife Jennifer Kelleher also places a strong emphasis on teaching parents about the natural mechanisms of childbirth. This helps support and protect each family’s preferred birth plan.

We also appreciate that their care model includes in-home postpartum checks. It really makes recovery a lot easier since mothers don’t have to travel immediately after delivery.

They also provide structured follow-ups at the two-week and six-week marks to monitor long-term healing. This helps reduce the pressure of needing early visits to a pharmacy for standard postpartum supplies.

That said, they have strict rules around eating and drinking during labor, which may feel limiting for mothers dealing with severe nausea.

Pros

  • Free initial consultation
  • Low intervention methods
  • Flexible delivery options
  • Continuous urgent access

Cons

  • Mandatory labor fasting rules
  • Restricted office support hours

Delivered all 5 of my babies safely and with the utmost care and respect

Jennifer is amazing. She cared for me during all 5 of my pregnancies and delivered all 5 of my babies safely and with the utmost care and respect shown to both me and my babies. She made me feel like I was important to her and I never felt rushed during our office visits. Jennifer is extremely knowledgeable and experienced and could almost always answer my questions and address my concerns. She is an incredible human and goes above and beyond for her clients. She earned my trust time and time again.

We absolutely loved having Jennifer as our midwife

We absolutely loved having Jennifer as our midwife for our second pregnancy and birth.

I knew taking a toddler to a fancy medical office for all my prenatal visits (or having  to find a sitter every time!) would not work for us. Jennifer included my little guy in every appointment! She let him “help” her take my blood pressure, check on baby, and clean the gel of my belly.

He is adjusting so well to being a big brother and I’m sure this type of family inclusive care played a huge role.

3. San Antonio Nurse Midwife Birth and Wellness Center

Hours: Monday to Friday 8:00AM–5:00PM

Thorough initial consultations can set a highly positive tone for the entire pregnancy journey. That’s why we love that the San Antonio Nurse Midwife Birth and Wellness Center dedicates roughly 2 hours of consultation time to new patients.

During the consultation, they’ll do a complete physical and detailed health history check, which helps ensure everything starts on the right foundation.

We also like that they operate as a comprehensive women’s health clinic, offering lifelong wellness exams that go beyond standard maternity care.

For families traveling long distances, the property includes a private cottage that can be booked for comfortable lodging before or after birth. This adds a lot of convenience during an already important time.

The clinical team also strongly protects the golden hours immediately after delivery to ensure uninterrupted skin-to-skin contact.

Just note that the center fully pauses routine business operations on weekends, so standard administrative calls can’t be scheduled on Saturdays or Sundays.

Pros

  • Collaborative medical safety
  • Partner infection treatment
  • Dedicated hydrotherapy facilities
  • Unrestricted labor movement

Cons

  • Complete weekend office closures
  • Short-term newborn care window

I have zero regrets about choosing SANM as my birth team

My babies were delivered by San Antonio Nurse Midwife 8 and 9 years ago, and every year on their birthdays we rewatch their birth videos. I can honestly say I have zero regrets about choosing SANM as my birth team.

When my now 9-year-old needed a little extra help taking his first breaths, Nikki stepped in immediately with calm, skilled care. Because of her quick action and steady presence, he was breathing well within moments and was 100% fine.

Nikki and her team were so personable and just so caring

Our family loves Nikki! She was our midwife when we first arrived to Texas and our first midwife to do a home birth with. Nikki and her team were so personable and just so caring, every visit I felt at home and comfortable. Her birth center is so beautiful, my kids had a memorable blast during our appts. And When you meet Nikki and her team you can see they truly care about their clients, their family, and their well-being.

4. Westover Hills Birth Center

Address: 9410 Dugas Dr Ste 131, San Antonio, TX 78245
Contact: 210-725-0428 | [email protected]
Hours: Monday to Thursday 10:00AM–5:00PM

We know how hard it can be to build trust with a provider when most medical visits feel rushed. That’s why we’re genuinely impressed by how much time the Westover Hills Birth Center team set aside to answer every single question.

We also noticed their strong experience with more complex natural birth scenarios, including vaginal births after cesareans and twin deliveries.

Another thing that stood out to us is how convenient their services are after delivery. Parents can skip a separate pediatrician visit right away because the facility provides a full range of required infant medical screenings on-site.

The midwives also continue postpartum monitoring to check on both mother and baby during those critical first six weeks.

One important detail to keep in mind is that the facility does not maintain direct contracts with health insurance providers. That means all services are billed as out-of-network, so it’s worth planning ahead for potential costs.

Pros

  • Holistic maternal assessment
  • Extensive comfort amenities
  • Calming sensory atmosphere
  • Complete maternity care package

Cons

  • No direct insurance networks
  • Exclusion of state health plans

Transparent, funny and very knowledgeable and confident in her skills

Robin was transparent, funny  and very knowledgeable and confident in her skills. She settled any hesitations and questions my husband had over giving birth at the clinic. The facility was beautifully decorated, clean and comfortable. My husband and I felt at ease over Robin’s extensive background as a midwife and felt confident in any situation she’d be able to handle it in a calm and levelheaded manner.

Robin is very experienced in natural birth, but also has great medical expertise

I had my first birth with WHBC, and normally I hate appointments but it was quite the opposite with Robin as my midwife! My water broke without contractions for 13 hours but she was able to naturally induce me and it worked right away! Robin is very experienced in natural birth but also has great medical expertise. My baby came with her fist by her face, but got her out with only a minor vaginal tear! My only complaint is that the assistant wasn’t helpful with helping me latch/breastfeeding, and it was my first.

5. Journey Midwifery

Website: journeymidwiferysa.com
Address: 12915 Jones Maltsberger Rd Suite 402, San Antonio, TX 78247
Contact: 830-556-8071 | [email protected]
Hours: Monday to Thursday 9:00AM–5:00PM

We really value providers who combine strong medical credentials with a genuine commitment to natural birth philosophies.

At Journey Midwifery, the lead provider holds a Master’s Degree in Nursing and is licensed as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN).

We also like that she intentionally limits the number of families she accepts each month, ensuring every birth gets the time and attention it deserves.

We also appreciate that expectant parents can schedule a free half-hour introductory session to learn more about the practice before making any financial commitments.

In addition to standard home deliveries, the team is fully equipped to support water births, which offer another option for natural pain management.

It’s just inconvenient that the clinic doesn’t have in-house facilities for standard medical testing. That means patients will need to travel to outside laboratories for required ultrasounds and other routine tests.

Pros

  • Extended prenatal appointment times
  • Continuous post-birth support
  • Constant access during late pregnancy
  • Immediate newborn diagnostics

Cons

  • Third-party lab referrals required
  • Mandatory credit card surcharges
