Schilo’s stands out as an iconic downtown staple famous for its historic deli-style atmosphere and incredible homemade root beer. Sitting just off the River Walk, it immediately gives off that sense of local history the moment you walk in.
The portions here are generous, making it an easy choice when we’re dining with family or sharing plates.
When we stopped by for lunch, the hot Reuben stood out as especially hearty and satisfying, and it’s easy to see why it gets so many recommendations.
We paired it with their signature root beer alongside, and the rich flavor of the drink paired perfectly with the savory meats.
They even serve breakfast all day. You can enjoy classic German deli foods whenever you like.
Just note that they often close on major holidays. This can limit your chances for festive in-person dining during those times.
Traditional German Cuisine
One of my absolute favorite restaurants. We eat here for breakfast and lunch whenever we visit San Antonio. House made root beer and traditional German cuisine is so tasty. Also. The German chocolate cake is amazing if you can get it before it’s gone.

Beethoven Maennerchor is San Antonio’s oldest German beer hall, and it really feels like a living piece of German-Texan musical history.
The space is deeply rooted in local tradition. It has an expansive outdoor beer garden that easily accommodates large groups and keeps the energy communal and relaxed.
When the live German choirs and bands perform, the whole atmosphere shifts into something much more immersive and culturally rich than a typical bar experience.
We also like the variety here, especially the extensive selection of German beers on tap that flow steadily during lively seasonal events.
That said, it mainly operates in the evenings and is closed for daytime lunch visits, which can make planning a bit more restrictive depending on your itinerary.
It actually works best as part of a broader food crawl, especially if you start the day exploring various Japanese restaurants in San Antonio before heading over for a beer in the evening
Authentic and Delicious
I attended Oktoberfest at Beethoven Maennerchor last October, and it truly brought back wonderful memories of Germany. The food was authentic and delicious, the service was friendly, and the atmosphere felt warm and welcoming.
I enjoyed the experience so much that I later became a member. It’s a special place that beautifully preserves German culture and creates a strong sense of community right here in San Antonio. If you appreciate good food, music, and authentic cultural traditions, this is a place you’ll enjoy.

Tiny Schnitzel Haus is a charming roadside escape just outside the city, specializing in scratch-made German schnitzels and sausages. The drive out to Pipe Creek itself already feels like a small reset, turning the meal into part of a relaxed mini getaway.
The experience here is very intimate and cozy. The owners provide friendly and personalized customer service that makes you feel like family.
When our team dropped by, I ordered their traditional schnitzel and was blown away by the fresh flavors and crispy texture. It’s a flavor that’s hard to find in the city center.
Just keep in mind that their operating days and hours are very limited. They only open during the daytime for the latter half of the week.
Still, this cozy spot is absolutely worth the drive if you time your visit right.
Very Kid Friendly
Best German food in Texas! Plates are less than $15 and they have a kids menu. Husband and wife owned and operated; husband is the cook from Germany and wife is extremely hospitable. Very kid friendly and BYOB welcomed. Nice easy drive outside of San Antonio heading towards Bandera.

They Are Genuine
The Schnitzel Haus serves some of the best German food I’ve ever had. Every dish is clearly made with love and authenticity-delicious, and packed full of flavor. But what truly sets this place apart are the owners, they are Genuine, kind-hearted people who make you feel like family the moment you walk in. My Personal Favorite is the Chicken Schnitzel Plate, or the Egg Scramble for breakfast. Highly recommend this place to anyone looking for amazing food and even better hospitality.

What we love about Alpine Haus Restaurant is its focus on authentic Jaegerschnitzel and rich mushroom sauces.
Portions are generous across the menu, especially with hearty dishes like schnitzel and rouladen.
We also enjoy the sausage sampler. It features a variety of high-quality bratwursts, all prepared from scratch using traditional recipes that really come through in the flavor.
What’s even better is that everything is served inside a beautifully restored 168-year-old building. The setting gives the whole experience a cozy, European-style charm that immediately feels warm and inviting.
The dining rooms, though, can get quite loud and crowded during peak weekend hours, making conversation a bit difficult.
Most Authentic
Sauerbraten and Jagerschnitzel are a must. Both were tender and savory while the Spaetzle was sweet and tangy. Cherry Strudel was sweet and a nice treat to end the night. The beers and wines are all German, by far the most authentic German restaurant I have even dined at. I would give more than 5 stars but Google will not let me.
The owner visited me for a few minutes and you could tell he puts every ounce of energy and passion into every plate.

Very Chill Vibe
We celebrated our 33 wedding anniversary here, today! Today! 😍. The foods and service was excellent! We will be back and with friends! We were here mid-day. No reservations needed. Very chill vibe! Nice German music playing. The fried brie is a meal in it self. Have a schnitzel…you will be happy!!! The alpine delight was just that!

Künstler Brewing combines traditional Bavarian brewing techniques with bold South Texas flavors. This unique approach creates fantastic craft beers paired with scratch-made pub fare.
We also enjoy the variety on tap, since the in-house brews rotate frequently and keep the experience fresh even for repeat visits.
The expansive outdoor Biergarten is another highlight, especially since it’s dog-friendly and works well for relaxed, casual meetups.
The atmosphere feels even more alive with regular trivia nights and weekend live music, which adds a fun social energy without feeling overwhelming.
One thing to keep in mind is parking. The on-site lot is quite small, so guests often need to look for street parking in the surrounding neighborhood.
Even with that extra walk, the food, drinks, and energy usually make it worth it.
Nice Outdoor Area
Our first time here today. I was really excited about having some Spätzle but didn’t realize that they only have a brunch menu until 3pm on Sundays.
So we went for the Schnitzel Benedict.
The eggs were perfectly poached. The Jägersauce was made with a touch of wine, I believe. The fries were nice and crispy. It was good. There are definitely some German touches in the Restaurant. When we left, we also saw that they have a nice outdoor area.

Point and Fast
Awesome place to come and drink German style beer. Happy hour 3-5 50% off draft beers. They have a very good selection of beers. When in season they have Oktoberfest. The debigulator 7.5% is a must try. The bar tender was on point and fast. It’s a must try for yourself.
