We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Local Expertise: We looked for contractors with specific experience in San Antonio’s diverse housing stock, from historic preservation to suburban new builds.

Communication & Transparency: We prioritized businesses that offer clear, written estimates and have a reputation for keeping clients in the loop.

Licensing & Insurance: We only considered companies that are fully licensed and insured to protect you and your property.

Customer Satisfaction: We analyzed reviews across multiple platforms to ensure consistent quality and post-project support.

Value for Money: We evaluated whether the quality of materials and craftsmanship justified the price point.

Living in San Antonio means balancing history with modern comfort. Restoring a Victorian gem in King William demands different skills than updating a mid-century ranch in Alamo Heights or flipping a property near the Pearl.

Yet for any of these projects, finding the right team remains the hardest part of the job. You need someone who understands our unique soil conditions, historic preservation codes, on top of the desire for outdoor living spaces that can handle our heat.

I’ve dug into the local market to find the best renovation contractors who don’t just promise results but deliver them. I looked for teams that respect your timeline, offer transparent pricing, and actually pick up the phone when you call.

Below are the top renovation experts in town who can turn your dusty blueprints into your dream home.

How much does a renovation cost in San Antonio?

Budgeting for a remodel here can feel like a guessing game, but having a realistic baseline helps.

When you break it down by the foot, major projects generally land in the $150 to $190 per square foot range.

If you are looking to refresh a bathroom, you should expect to set aside anywhere from $5,000 to $15,000.

Kitchens are a bigger beast, typically running between $14,200 and $50,600, depending on whether you are just swapping cabinets or tearing down walls. For those planning a complete overhaul, whole-home renovations often average around $35,900, but this fluctuates wildly based on size and finishes.

Remember, labor and materials are the biggest variables, so always pad that budget for the unexpected surprises hiding behind your drywall.

Website: https://www.statewideremodeling.com/texas/san-antonio/

Address: 1111 Arion Pkwy #120

Contact: +1 210-985-2562

Hours: Mon – Sun: 8 AM – 8 PM

Statewide Remodeling is a powerhouse for homeowners who want speed without sacrificing quality.

Their biggest draw is the one-day installation for bathrooms, which is a game-changer if you only have one bathroom in the house and can’t afford weeks of downtime.

They focus heavily on older homes, specifically those from the 70s and 80s that are common in our established neighborhoods.

Beyond the speed, they prioritize energy efficiency. They often start with an audit to see if your windows or insulation are costing you money, which is vital during our scorching summers.

While they are a large operation, they maintain a local feel with specific expertise in San Antonio’s housing quirks.

However, keep in mind that they strictly work with homeowners, so if you are renting or a property management firm, you might need to look elsewhere.

Pros

  • Free in-home estimates provided
  • Specializes in 1970s-80s homes
  • High customer satisfaction ratings
  • Energy efficiency audits available

Cons

  • Services are restricted to homeowners only

Very professional!

Absolutely amazing looking bathtub remodel from Joseph and Jon at Statewide Remodeling. The work was very efficient and tidy throughout the process. The cleaned up perfectly which allows us to still be able to use the toilet while the remodeling was being done. I work from home and hardly even knew they were doing the work. We also felt confident talking with them our their senior field supervisor named Scott Ornelas that we were in good hands. Very professional and will definitely use them on future projects at our home.

He was very thorough!

Chris came by to give me a price for remodeling my shower. He was very thorough in explaining. He was patient and kind considering I had him repeat his explanations. I am really excited because after explaining my situation he figured different ways to help me. I was very satisfied with the quote and payment plan. Being single and one income it was perfect for me. I recommend him very highly!

Expo Home Improvement is a Texas-grown company that builds its services around the specific needs of local homeowners. Since 2006, they have focused on speed, aiming to finish projects in days rather than months.

This efficiency is backed by their use of expert, certified installers instead of random subcontractors, which gives you a higher level of consistency in the craftsmanship.

I actually had a chance to chat with their team recently about their bathroom projects, and their passion for “safety upgrades” stood out as genuine care for aging homeowners.

They offer incredible financing options, like 0% interest until 2027, making them accessible for families on a budget. Their warranties are also industry-leading, giving you peace of mind long after the crew has left.

However, because they are so focused on serving Texans, they may not be an option at all if you live just outside the state lines.

Pros

  • Fast project completion times
  • Certified expert installers used
  • Strong post-installation support
  • Excellent financing options available

Cons

  • Service limited to Texas residents

The whole experience was great!

The whole experience was great! The communication phone calls and emails were also great! Everything was pre-planned and coordinated prior to the construction date. Arrival time was first thing in the morning 8:30 as per discussion. My lead installer was Angel and Luis A and Diego A and Robert the plumber. The crew installed plastic covering in the construction area and tarps were laid down in the traffic Lanes and everything was cleaned up after installation could not be happier with everything that happened today so glad we did this!

If you prefer supporting local, minority veteran-owned businesses, Herbert H. Construction is a fantastic choice. Founded in 1999, they bring over 45 years of combined experience to the table.

They are deeply embedded in the community and offer tangible perks like discounts for veterans and seniors. Plus, they handle the headache of permits for you, ensuring everything is up to code without you having to visit the city office.

They also help with insurance claims, acting as an advocate when you are dealing with adjusters.

Their versatility is a major plus, too. Their crew can manage complex custom home builds alongside standard roofing repairs and interior painting.

The only downside to their meticulous nature is that estimates aren’t instant. You might wait three or four days to get your numbers, but the accuracy is usually worth the wait.

Pros

  • Minority veteran-owned business
  • Handles all necessary permits
  • Assists with insurance claims
  • Discounts for veterans and seniors

Cons

  • Estimates can take 3-4 days

Herbert H Construction was professional, timely, and did high quality work.

JB was very responsive and easy to communicate with. The crew did excellent work on a room extension plus a door/window swap. Herbert H Construction was professional, timely, and did high quality work. Highly recommend!

Herbert and his contractors did an excellent job

Herbert and his contractors did an excellent job expanding our laundry room. We went from a pass-through with only room for the washer/dryer…To a walk-in laundry room with room for a folding counter. every step of the way they were considerate about keeping our costs down. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for remodeling and construction on their current home.

Address: 6100 Bandera Rd #301

Contact: +1 210-548-3906

Hours: Available 24/7

ALO General Contractor stands out for its flexibility and comprehensive service list.

Operating 24 hours is highly unusual for a contractor, but it proves they are available exactly when you need them.

They take a customized approach to every project, tailoring their work to your specific budget and timeline rather than forcing you into a cookie-cutter package. Their capabilities extend to heavy structural work like steel assembly, which is rare for residential-focused teams.

Notably, they handle simple roof repairs with the same attention to detail as ground-up commercial builds.

Transparency is their other big selling point. They provide clear, itemized estimates so you aren’t hit with “hidden fees” halfway through the job.

On top of that, they also manage all the regulatory red tape, including zoning and inspections.

Just note that they strictly serve the San Antonio area, so they likely won’t travel far out to the hill country.

Pros

  • Open 24 hours for availability
  • Transparent, itemized estimates
  • Handles zoning and inspections
  • Capable of heavy structural work

Cons

  • Strictly limited to San Antonio area

Very professional and reliable service.

The roof repair service was excellent. The team arrived on time, explained the issue clearly, and fixed everything efficiently. The quality of work was solid, and my roof has been problem-free since. Very professional and reliable service.

Address: 14127 Jones Maltsberger Rd

Contact: +1 210-255-2954

Hours: Mon – Fri: 8 AM – 5 PM

Shaw Company Remodeling offers a premium, family-oriented experience that is hard to beat.

As a second-generation business, they treat your home with a level of respect that only comes from decades of reputation building.

Their “Top 500 Remodeler Nationwide” ranking signals that they have the systems in place to handle complex jobs smoothly. With this, they promise no high-pressure sales tactics, focusing instead on design and quality.

I visited their 2,600 sq. ft. showroom on Jones Maltsberger recently, and being able to physically touch the materials before purchase makes a huge difference in visualizing the final result.

You work with a dedicated design team, which prevents those “I didn’t think it would look like that” moments.

They are also fully licensed and insured, ensuring a professional job from start to finish.

The only catch is that their service area is tight, sticking to San Antonio and immediate neighbors like Boerne only. You might have to look elsewhere if your location is not within these limits.

Pros

  • Large showroom for material selection
  • No high-pressure sales tactics
  • Dedicated design team support
  • Second-generation family business

Cons

  • Service area is geographically limited

Freddie and his team worked diligently

I recently finish a bathroom renovation, that brought by early nineties bathroom, into the present day. I had gotten other bids from 3-4 other companies but chose Shaw based on my meeting with Jordan as well as some design options provided. Freddie and his team worked diligently through out the project and were able to get it completed in a timely manner.

Shaw Company Remodeling demonstrated being a trusted contractor.

Very professional from the time they called me to set up the appointment for quote to final walkthrough. Shaw Company Remodeling demonstrated being a trusted contractor. From office personnel (Audrey and Sherry) to field crew, they were respectful, diligent and professional. Jordan (Sales), Fabian (Project Manager) and his crew: Fernando, Cristian, Misael, Pedro, Melvin, Zacarías, Sergio, Danny, Javier and Fabian (father) were all great individuals who understood my concerns and did everything they could to meet or surpass my expectations. My wife and I are very pleased with the work Shaw Company Remodeling did in our home.
