We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.
  • Coaching Expertise: We looked for instructors with legitimate fight experience or authentic Thai lineage to ensure high-quality technical instruction. Knowing proper body mechanics is crucial to preventing injuries and maximizing power.
  •
  • Facility Amenities: A great training environment requires ample mat space, heavy bags, and clean training areas. We evaluated the quality and accessibility of the equipment available for both group classes and solo practice.
  •
  • Community Vibe: Combat sports demand a supportive, ego-free atmosphere where beginners and seasoned fighters can train safely together. We prioritized gyms that actively foster a positive team culture and mutual respect.
  •
  • Schedule Flexibility: Consistency is key to mastering any martial art, so varied class times are a major advantage. We favored spots offering multiple sessions throughout the day to accommodate busy professionals and shift workers.
  •
  • Pricing Transparency: Clear, straightforward membership fees allow students to train without worrying about hidden costs. We gave high marks to facilities offering month-to-month options and clear trial periods.

1. Dominion MMA, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu & San Antonio MMA Training Gym

Website: https://www.dominionmma.com/

Address: 9910 W Loop 1604 N #117

Contact: +1 210 560 0662

Hours:

  • Monday – Friday: 9 AM–1 PM, 5–9 PM
  • Saturday: 7 AM–1:30 PM

Stepping onto the mats without the pressure of a long-term contract is a huge relief with Dominion MMA. I love how they offer transparent month-to-month memberships with no hidden fees.

Members also get access to a wide range of specialized programs, including Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), No Gi Wrestling, and dedicated striking classes.

I dropped by recently for their 3-day free trial. During that time, I noticed how committed the striking coaches were to teaching the true science of eight limbs, rather than just offering a basic cardio workout.

They also actively support competitors preparing for local and regional events, which gives the room a distinctly intense energy.

Overall, their high-intensity approach is great for active fighters. However, it may feel a bit overwhelming for someone with absolutely no prior martial arts background.

Pros

  • Specialized striking coaches
  • Month-to-month billing
  • Active competitive team
  • Cross-training access

Cons

  • Premium price point
  • Intimidating beginner intensity

Customer Reviews:

Very open and welcoming space!

Very open and welcoming space! Coaches are very welcoming to newcomers and it means a lot that I am being given an opportunity to train at Dominion MMA even without doing the classes so I can follow my training routine. But regardless of that it also is very reassuring that when I want to start doing classes or 1 on 1 with a Coach, that is waiting for me too.

Great place!

Great place! I like the closeness and the team mentality. I have never really seen a gym doing outings and team building exercises which is unique and cool. Give it a shot 3 days for free.  I like the fact I got to stay after class to roll for a bit and work with people of my skill level.

2. Ambush Muay Thai

ambush-muay-thai

Website: https://www.ambushmuaythai.com/

Address: 12806 Nacogdoches Rd

Contact: +1 21 0920 5740

Hours:

  • Monday & Wednesday: 5:30–8:30 PM
  • Tuesday & Thursday: 10:30 AM–12:30 PM, 5:30–8:30 PM
  • Friday: 5:30–7:30 PM
  • Saturday, 9:30 AM–12:30 PM

Ambush Muay Thai’s training emphasizes the true art of eight limbs, with a strong focus on complex clinch work and elbows. Impressively, they’ve prepared athletes for major global organizations like the UFC.

Clearly, learning authentic techniques from the Buddhai-Sawan USA lineage hits differently. Their instruction is deeply rooted in traditional Thai boxing rather than standard fitness kickboxing.

To keep new students safe, everyone begins in a structured, semi-private introductory class so they can build a solid foundation before joining the general population.

Because of this methodical approach, the intimidation factor often found in elite-level fight camps is greatly reduced.

That said, if you want in-house grappling, you may eventually need to supplement your training with a personal trainer or another facility, since Ambush Muay Thai focuses strictly on striking.

In the same way, their strong emphasis on technical sparring drills may make the gym less appealing for someone who is simply looking for a casual workout.

Pros

  • Authentic Thai lineage
  • Structured beginner onboarding
  • Elite competitive coaching
  • Specialized striking integration

Cons

  • Striking only facility
  • Limited fitness-only appeal

Amazing place. Has classes and skill levels for everyone. Whether you are going to get fit, a hobbyist or an active or aspiring  fighter this gym has it all! Flexible class schedule with quite a few different class time and options. More importantly coaches Mike and Fernando have created a culture here. Go to any local fights or grappling tournaments and you see the community Ambush has created. Give it a whirl you won’t be disappointed

It’s a great place to get an excellent workout

I’ve been training for almost a year and haven’t regretted a day. It’s a great place to get an excellent workout and learn Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu from highly knowledge coaches. Whether you’re looking for a workout and learn fundamental or wanting to develop and compete in tournaments, this is a welcoming and fun community to train and learn from no matter your skill level.

3. RONIN MMA TEXAS

ronin-mma-texas

Website: https://www.roninmmatx.com/

Address: 5630 W Loop 1604 N STE 104

Contact: +1 210 775 4133

Hours:

  • Monday – Thursday: 5:30–8:30 PM
  • Friday: 6:30–8:30 PM

Finding a highly inclusive, female veteran-owned facility adds a unique sense of grit and discipline to the training environment.

RONIN MMA TEXAS stands out for their adaptive programs designed for individuals with physical limitations. They also have meaningful public service discounts for military personnel, first responders, and local teachers.

When I spoke with a few regular members, they praised the genuinely judgment-free atmosphere. As a result, it feels especially welcoming for absolute beginners who may be nervous about throwing their first punch.

Their month-to-month payment structure also gives members excellent flexibility without locking them into a long-term commitment.

However, the compact facility means you will likely have a smaller pool of sparring partners. Also, the evening-heavy schedule may be inconvenient for shift workers who need daytime availability.

Pros

  • Judgment-free environment
  • No-contract memberships
  • Veteran and teacher discounts
  • Adaptive physical training

Cons

  • Smaller sparring pool
  • Limited daytime schedule

Customer Reviews:

Pricing is reasonable

Pricing is reasonable. I also like the schedule is easily accessible on their site. Each day is a different art so there are variety of skills and techniques to learn. Class schedules are open so can drop in whatever days align with your availability. The coaches are very detailed in explaining the techniques and also why the technique is performed in a specific manner and they also do great in letting everyone move at their individual pace within classes.

My experience with Ronin MMA was amazing

My experience with Ronin MMA was amazing. The professor was friendly and welcomed me and my buddy with open arms. She took the time to teach us some new submissions and escapes. The members were also very polite and helped us with our stand-up. If you are ever in the area and looking for a positive and helpful BJJ gym I highly recommend Ronin MMA. They also specialize in Muaythai and MMA. I am looking forward to visiting soon.

4. Kingdom Martial Arts Academy

kingdom-martial-arts-academy

Website: https://kingdommartialartsacademy.com/

Address: 5409 Bandera Rd Suite 210

Contact: +1 210 580 6406

Hours: Monday & Wednesday: 6:30 AM–8 PM; Tuesday: 9 AM–8 PM; Thursday: 9 AM–7:15 PM; Friday: 6:30 AM–6:30 PM

Deep cultural immersion shapes the curriculum at Kingdom Martial Arts Academy. After all, the founders lived and trained extensively in Thailand before bringing authentic techniques back to Texas.

Because of that background, the instruction feels deeply rooted in tradition. The head coach also specializes in the highly technical “Muay Femur” style, which emphasizes timing, precision, and fight IQ over raw power.

This holistic philosophy goes beyond physical striking by placing strong emphasis on mental conditioning and emotional resilience.

On top of that, students can join niche classes such as their striking-inspired lower-body sculpting program, which pairs well with active recovery at local Pilates studios.

But note that the strong focus on intricate tactical footwork can create a steep learning curve. As a result, it may feel frustrating for people who are simply looking for a fast-paced cardio session.

Pros

  • Direct Thai training lineage
  • Highly technical instruction
  • Mental resilience coaching
  • Unique fitness programs

Cons

  • No grappling cross-training
  • Steep technical learning curve

Customer Reviews:

I’d recommend KMA to anyone!

This is more than a gym; it’s a family that supports each other in reaching new heights physically, mentally, and emotionally. Coming in as a complete beginner to Muay Thai, I felt welcomed from the first day of training, and over two years later, I can confidently say I made the right choice coming here. I’d recommend KMA to anyone!

It’s been a wonderful experience!

My son (7yrs old) has really enjoyed his Muay Thai classes! Marcus has been fantastic with him, especially since this is his first experience with martial arts. My son has thrived under Marcus’s guidance and looks forward to every class. It’s been a wonderful experience!

5. Ohana West

ohana-west

Website: https://ohanajiujitsu.com/

Address: 1255 SW Loop 410 #117

Contact: +1 210 460 0750

Hours:

  • Monday – Friday: 6 AM–9 PM
  •  Saturday: 8 AM–12 AM

Walking into a large facility that treats every student like family creates a welcoming atmosphere for a well-rounded combat sports education.

Students have access to a comprehensive schedule that includes grappling, wrestling, and striking, all taught through a scaled approach that adapts to their current physical abilities.

Another major advantage is the network of locations they have across the city. With this, they offer excellent flexibility, making it easier for you to maintain a consistent routine no matter where the day takes you.

Their one-week free trial is also a great way to test the waters and explore the spacious mat areas before fully committing.

Still, evening classes tend to attract very large crowds. This can mean fewer chances for one-on-one correction from the head instructor.

Pros

  • Comprehensive martial arts schedule
  • Universally scaled workouts
  • Multi-location access
  • Large diverse partner pool

Cons

  • Diluted pure Thai immersion
  • Large peak class sizes

I have been with Ohana West for about 2 years now. This gym has been great for myself and my family. I was the only one in my family training, now my wife and two boys train as well. This gym has opened up so many opportunities for my family! 11/10 recommend.
