The 5 Best Transmission Shops in San Antonio for Reliable Repairs

We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Transparent Pricing: We looked for facilities that provide upfront estimates without hidden fees or surprise upcharges. Clear communication about labor rates and part costs is essential for building trust with customers.

Warranty Protection: A robust guarantee on parts and labor proves a shop actually stands behind its workmanship. We prioritized businesses offering at least a one-year or 12,000-mile safety net on major mechanical repairs.

Diagnostic Accuracy: Guesswork has no place in automotive repair, especially when handling complex drivetrain systems. We selected specialists who invest in modern scanning tools to pinpoint electronic issues quickly and accurately.

Community Reputation: We analyzed long-term track records, local discounts, and overall customer satisfaction across the city. Shops that treat their neighbors with respect and honesty naturally rose to the top of our list.

Finding the best transmission shop in San Antonio gets stressful fast when your car starts slipping, jerking, or refusing to shift cleanly.

A transmission problem can turn a normal workweek into towing bills, missed appointments, and a lot of second-guessing. I focused on local shops that stand out for honest diagnostics, solid warranty coverage, and repair options that fit different budgets.

This guide narrows things down so you can compare specialists without sorting through a pile of mixed reviews on your own.

Website: https://www.transmissionrepair-sa.com/

Address: 2466 Babcock Rd. Ste. 132

Contact: (210) 465-1691

Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM; Saturday, 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM

Better Transmission San Antonio stands out for speed, which matters a lot when your daily driver is stuck in the shop.

Their team is known for moving quickly on major transmission work, and that kind of turnaround can save you from scrambling for rides all week.

I also appreciate that they keep the first step simple with free computer diagnostics and road testing. That makes it easier to understand the problem before you commit to a bigger bill.

The one-year parts and labor warranty adds another layer of reassurance, and their commercial fleet service plans are helpful for small business owners who need dependable support.

The main drawback is the schedule. They’re closed on Sundays, so weekend drop-offs and pickups aren’t as flexible as they could be.

Pros

  • 5% discount for specific community groups
  • Free computer diagnostics and road testing
  • One-year parts and labor warranty
  • Commercial fleet service plans available

Cons

  • Closed completely on Sundays

Customer Reviews

I highly recommend you all go here for any transmission issues.

Rene and his son from Better Transmissions made the process stress free. They had a whole transmission in within 5 days. Rene also made me aware of other issues he found while the transmission was out and gave me great pricing to repair it while he was there. I have not had such great service like this in a long time. I highly recommend you all go here for any transmission issues. Thank you Rene and son for making this. Smooth transaction.

Made the process flawless.

My husbands transmission went out and we had a friend refer us to this place. I am so glad they did! Even though it was upsetting to have to rebuild the transmission, Rene made the process flawless. He sent a tow truck the following day after my husband talked to him and then had the transmission build and ready for pick up 2 days after that! Rene also kept in contact with him , giving him updates . Now a days, Customer Service is rare but Rene treated us like we were the only customers he had at BT.

2. Mr. Transmission

Website: https://mrtransmission.com/

Address: 1560 Austin Hwy

Contact: (210) 832-8600

Hours: Monday-Friday, 7:30 AM – 6:00 PM

Mr. Transmission makes a strong case for drivers who want backup beyond San Antonio. Their 12-month or 12,000-mile warranty is honored across a large franchise network, which is a real comfort if you travel often or break down away from home.

What also stands out is the extra help around big repairs. They offer free towing when you authorize major work, and they can handle more than just the transmission itself, including Constant Velocity (CV) joints and axles.

That broader drivetrain support can save you from hopping between shops. Flexible payment options are another plus when a breakdown hits at the worst possible time.

The downside is convenience. This location keeps a weekday-only schedule, so anyone with a packed Monday-to-Friday routine may find drop-off and pickup harder to manage.

Pros

  • Free towing with major authorized repair
  • Complimentary performance and fluid checks
  • Comprehensive drivetrain repair capability
  • Tailored financial and payment options

Cons

  • Closed entirely on Saturdays and Sundays

Customer Reviews

Highly recommended!

Brought my Ford Fusion in about a week or two ago after the transmission went out. Robert was super kind, knowledgeable, and transparent throughout the whole process. He walked us through multiple payment options and explained the difference between rebuilding the transmission versus buying a new one, which ended up saving us a couple thousand dollars. Really appreciate the honesty and service — highly recommend!

Definitely recommend them for your transmission problems!

Took my 2004 Dodge Ram diesel truck here for a transmission code P0869 three months ago, and so far still good working good they replaced governor pressure sensor and transducer and filled it with proper PERFECT level ATF. Honest great work! They diagnosed it professionally, and definitely recommend them for your transmission problems!

3. Bert’s Gene Brown Transmission

Website: http://brokentransmission.com/

Address: 11531 Old Perrin Beitel Rd

Contact: (210) 637-5555 | [email protected]

Hours: Monday-Friday, 7:00 AM – 5:30 PM

Bert’s Gene Brown Transmission feels especially useful when your problem doesn’t happen at a convenient hour.

The shop offers an after-hours phone or text line seven days a week, which is rare and genuinely helpful when you’re stuck trying to figure out your next move.

They’ve been operating since 1992, and that long family-run history shows up in the way they explain repairs before starting the work.

I also like that they try to find reliable used parts when a brand-new component would push the bill too far. That kind of flexibility can make a hard repair decision easier. They also handle third-party warranty claims, which takes some pressure off the customer.

The catch is that the physical shop is closed on weekends, so you can’t handle pickup on Saturday or Sunday.

Pros

  • Over 30 years of industry experience
  • Transparent mechanical repair education
  • Budget-friendly used part sourcing
  • Handles third-party warranty claims

Cons

  • Physical shop is closed all weekend

Customer Reviews

Go see these guys. They can fix it all.

I was referred to a Bert Gene Brown Transmission buy a veteran mechanic is San Antonio.  These guys quickly rebuilt an original transmission on my 1956 Cadillac.  The shop manager responded to my texts everyday including after hours calls.  They allowed me to come in weekly and talk to the technician who worked on my car and get updates from the source.  After the rebuild I’ve driven the car 500 miles and she drives better than ever.  I’ll be back.   Go see these guys.  They can fix it all

Service was fast and reasonably priced.

I came into town for a conference and needed transmission fluid changed. They did the job, gave me some good advice and didn’t try to upsell anything. Service was fast and reasonably priced. They should be on your speed dial if you own a GM.

4. Option Transmission

Website: https://www.210trans.com/

Address: 11111 West Ave

Contact: (210) 979-6950

Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Option Transmission is a good fit for drivers who care about factory-spec repairs.

The shop focuses on Original Equipment (OE) transmission rebuilds, with the goal of bringing components back to factory standards instead of patching things together with questionable substitutes.

That attention to compatibility and detail is the same kind of thing I appreciate in any specialty repair business, even a trusted local bike shop

With more than 65 years of combined experience, the team works on everything from everyday cars to commercial fleet vehicles.

Their membership in the Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association (ATRA) adds credibility, and the Golden Rule Warranty gives customers a little more peace of mind after the work is done.

The limitation is availability. They keep a strict Monday-to-Friday schedule, which makes towing, approvals, and pickups harder if you’re only free on the weekend.

Pros

  • Over 65 years of combined experience
  • Broad engine and driveline capabilities
  • Equipped for commercial fleet vehicles
  • Backed by the Golden Rule Warranty

Cons

  • Strict Monday to Friday schedule

Customer Reviews

Their prices were very fair.

My transmission went out while driving. I had it towed to Option. They gave me some pretty bad news and I had to completely rebuild the transmission. Their prices were very fair and they had it knocked out very quickly. I have now driven the truck 1,500 miles and have had zero issues. I highly recommend Option Transmission.

They made the whole process so easy and reasonably priced.

Honest and reliable business. My family has been coming here for years because the owner and mechanics have always been up front and honest about all our repair work. I’ve had a full transmission swap for my Jeep Cherokee here and they made the whole process so easy and reasonably priced, and the repair work has held up over the years. I would recommend this place to everyone.

5. Kosub Transmission

kosub-transmission

Website: https://www.transmissionrepairsa.com/

Address: 7455 US Hwy 87 E

Contact: (210) 648-4991 | [email protected]

Hours: Monday-Thursday, 8:00 AM – 5:30 PM; Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Kosub Transmission is the shop I would look at first if long-term durability matters more than finding the cheapest possible fix. They’re serious about rebuild quality and refuse to install used parts, which says a lot about the standard they’re trying to maintain.

I value that level of precision because transmission work rewards careful specialists, much like any other detail-heavy service, even something as different as local cat grooming

Their technicians hold certifications from the Automatic Transmission Service Group (ATSG) and ATRA, and they’re especially comfortable with tricky domestic heavy-duty units like the Ford 10R80.

Advanced electronic diagnostics are another plus when the issue isn’t obvious right away.

The main limitation is focus. If you drive a manual or a niche foreign import, this shop is probably not the right match.

Pros

  • ATSG and ATRA certified technicians
  • Specializes in domestic heavy-duty trucks
  • Deeply trusted multi-generational business
  • Advanced electronic diagnostic evaluation

Cons

  • Refuses to work on manual gearboxes
  • Cannot service niche foreign imports

Customer Reviews

Nice and professional and were reasonably priced.

We had a 2004 GMC Sierra pickup that needed a rebuilt transmission. They were so nice and professional and were reasonably priced.  It is so nice to go to a place where they put the customer first.  They told us step by step what they were going to do and finished the job on time. Ron and Nita Ryan

I am a very satisfied customer.

I had the transmission rebuilt in my 2013 GMC 2500HD here. Within 24 hours of dropping my truck off, the team had diagnosed the transmission and had an estimate ready. They finished the repairs early and within the estimate. I am a very satisfied customer. When I called for updates, the staff was courteous and extremely helpful. I highly recommend Gerald Kosub Transmission to everyone.
