Finding the Best Pet Shop in San Antonio for Your Furry Family

We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Product Variety: A great store needs to stock everything from basic nutrition to specialized accessories. We looked for locations offering a wide range of goods to save you an extra trip.

Animal Welfare: Shopping for live animals requires strict ethical standards and transparency from the business owner. We focused on businesses that source from licensed breeders and maintain clean environments.

Staff Knowledge: Navigating dietary needs and pet care can be overwhelming for new owners. We prioritized shops where the employees offer helpful guidance without pressuring you into a sale.

Customer Experience: The layout and atmosphere of a retail space dictate how enjoyable your visit will be. We evaluated stores based on their cleanliness and overall welcoming vibe.

Bringing a new pet home is easily one of the most exciting days, but the real work starts when you realize just how many supplies you actually need.

If you’re tracking down that specific premium kibble or picking out a bed that won’t be an eyesore in your living room, having a go-to pet shop in San Antonio makes life so much easier.

It takes a village to raise a happy pet, and retail stores are just one piece of the puzzle alongside top-notch mobile dog grooming services and trusted local vets.

I’ve actually spent plenty of Saturday mornings scouting local aisles to find the best gear for my own companions, so read on for my top picks!

What are the typical costs for getting a new pet in San Antonio?

When getting a new pet in San Antonio, expect to pay $50 for a shelter adoption to over $7,000 for a specific breed from a retail shop.

Beyond the initial cost of the animal, budgeting for quality food and essential startup gear is a must for any new pet parent in the Alamo City.

Shelter Adoption (San Antonio)$50 – $200
Pet Store Dog Purchase (Texas)$2,500 – $7,000+

Finding a specific purebred or designer puppy locally can be stressful. Puppyland San Antonio stands out by sourcing exclusively from USDA-licensed breeders and offering a “Fur-ever Home Program” with lifetime support for rehoming.

When you visit, you can sit down and play with the puppies in a clean environment before making any decisions. The staff goes out of their way to match you with a breed that fits your daily routine.

I also like their comprehensive protection package that includes microchip enrollment and a training subscription.

Just a heads up: While the financing options help remove upfront financial barriers, the overall pricing is noticeably higher than budget-conscious buyers might expect.

Customer service responsiveness also tends to vary widely depending on the store’s level of busyness.

Pros

  • Wide breed selection in one spot
  • Hands-on shopping experience
  • Knowledgeable staff
  • Financing options available

Cons

  • Higher pricing
  • Inconsistent staff responsiveness

Definitely recommending and coming back!

Puppyland is amazing! All the dogs are so clean and treated well. I came in looking to buy a new baby for my family and the staff there is so sweet and informative on all of their breeds. We were able to play with the ones wanted to and of course were informed to make sure to clean our hands in between touching everyone to keep everyone healthy. My kids had a blast interacting with not only the dogs but the adults helping us find the perfect sweetheart to come home with! Definitely recommending and coming back!

helped me pick out my dog

I got a dog today and everybody was so nice. I think we had Mia or Emily helping me. I forgot her name. I’m so sorry but she was so nice. She helped me pick out my dog and she was so nice and patient but yeah now I have Georgie and he is so cute and wonderful.

Store Hours: By Appointment Only (Mon – Fri: 9:00 AM–8:00 PM; Sat: 9:00 AM–7:00 PM; Sun: 11:00 AM–6:00 PM)

Keeping kids entertained while shopping for pet supplies is usually a challenge. Thankfully, Polly’s Pet Shop solves that by offering an immersive in-store experience complete with areas like “Critter Springs” and “Tiki Falls.”

Operating since 1977, they’ve built strong community roots while stocking a massive 17,000-square-foot facility. I recently took my niece here to see the aquariums, and we ended up spending an hour exploring the interactive exhibits.

On the downside, the sprawling layout makes it difficult to track down an employee at times.

We were able to find a staff member after a while, and loved how they were genuinely friendly and happy to explain the care requirements for different reptiles and birds, too!

Pros

  • Wide product selection across types
  • Unique immersive store experience
  • Family-owned with local roots
  • High cleanliness standards

Cons

  • Delays in customer assistance
  • Inconsistent staff responsiveness

I had a great time

Polly’s pet store should be called Polly’s amazing adventures. The store has a variety of animals, pet supplies galore, and the displays are fantastic. I felt as though I was at an adventure park. Staff was very knowledgeable, friendly and provided helpfull feedback. I had a great time.

Address: 6418 Bandera Rd

Contact: 210-255-8183

Hours: Mon-Sat: 11:30 AM–8 PM, Sun: 12–6 PM

Welcoming a popular small breed, such as a French Bulldog or Dachshund, often involves long waiting lists. Junior’s Pet House bypasses that hurdle by maintaining a diverse selection of puppies ready for families to adopt in a local storefront.

The team here also focuses heavily on customer satisfaction by creating a welcoming adoption environment.

For instance, every puppy comes home with a one-year congenital health warranty to ease new parents’ minds. They even include a free veterinary consultation for the first year to ensure your new companion starts off on the right foot.

Despite the strong initial health warranties, a few buyers have reported that puppies fell ill shortly after arriving home. This makes the included vet consultation a critical part of the process for anyone purchasing a pet here.

Pros

  • Variety of popular puppy breeds
  • Local in-store viewing experience
  • Focus on customer satisfaction
  • Free veterinary consultation included

Cons

  • Reports of early health issues
  • Potential need for post-purchase care

Come and get your new baby yall.

Mrs.Nina and Echo were so welcoming from the moment we first spoke in the phone. These two helped us find the perfect puppy without breaking the bank. This has absolutely been the most positive outcome we have had since puppy shopping. Come and get your new baby yall. 🥰 we’re in love already …

Address: 1030 Basse Rd

Contact: (210) 733-6243

Hours: Mon-Sun: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Finding specialized care items for non-traditional animals can be incredibly frustrating. Fortunately, Forever Pets Inc specializes in exotic pets like reptiles and small mammals, serving as one of San Antonio’s oldest family-owned shops.

Their visually engaging displays and themed setups create a memorable visit every time you walk through the doors. Plus, the team is always ready to offer guidance on proper nutrition and habitat maintenance for beginners and veterans alike.

A friend of mine even relies entirely on their knowledgeable staff to source specific dietary supplies for her bearded dragon, so I decided to tag along several times.

However, the shop’s specialized focus comes at a premium, as certain exotic animals carry a steeper price tag than you might find elsewhere.

I also noticed that customer service can feel rushed during peak hours, and some visitors have questioned the consistency of animal handling practices.

Pros

  • Wide variety of exotic pets
  • Long-standing local business
  • Knowledgeable and helpful staff
  • Affordable standard supplies

Cons

  • Higher pricing for certain animals
  • Inconsistent customer service

 Friendly and helpful staff.

An interesting mix of pet reptiles, amphibians,  fish, and mammals. A giant boa constrictor welcomes you at the door and make sure to go to the back to say Hi to Sally. Friendly and helpful staff.

Beyond custom nutrition, they carry an impressive selection of premium commercial brands and bake fresh dog biscuits daily.

  • Multiple accessible locations
  • Local delivery options

Cons

  • Inconsistent service across visits
  • Unpredictable staff helpfulness

an amazing experience

What an amazing experience we had when we visited this Pet Barn . The staff was super friendly and explained the process of creating a special a healthy dog food for my 8 year old Baby.  There’s 3 steps after selecting your dog food ( see the photos).  All 3 steps are included in the price of the dog food.

Quick and easy, and very helpful staff.

Went in to get a bag of dog food, and when I got it to my car, I realized there was a hole in the bag. I went back inside and explained the situation to the workers, and they let me grab another bag. Quick and easy, and very helpful staff.
