Hours:

Getting started with grappling is much easier when a facility offers a dedicated fundamentals curriculum alongside a completely risk-free first month of training.
Pinnacle Martial Arts truly excels at easing newcomers into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) without overwhelming them. Structured onboarding teaches the basics step-by-step with 10+ years of expert instruction.
Plus, the gym operates on a flexible month-to-month basis, so you never feel trapped in a long financial commitment. You can also mix up your routine by adding striking classes to your schedule.
One downside is that their kids’ program requires children to be at least four years old, so parents of younger toddlers will need to look elsewhere.
However, the welcoming vibe and lack of mandatory long-term contracts make this an excellent starting point for adults.

- Friday: 6:00 AM – 7:00 PM
- Saturday: 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM
- Sunday: 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM
Finding a gym that values a supportive culture over competition is tough, but this academy delivers on that. They focus heavily on character development, integrating mindset coaching and strength training directly into their diverse curriculum.
When I dropped in to check out their evening sessions, the welcoming atmosphere among the students was immediately apparent.
They offer a fantastic, structured after-school program for kids that might remind some parents of the environments found in the best preschools in San Antonio. You can also easily cross-train in wrestling and striking within the same building.
Keep in mind that their earliest kids’ class requires participants to be fully potty trained, and the bulk of their adult schedule is heavily concentrated in the late afternoon.
Despite those minor scheduling quirks, it’s a highly motivating place to train.

We love Ohana!
We love Ohana! Our son has been doing jujitsu since 2021 at 8 years old & started wrestling shortly after starting Jiujitsu. He has learned so much more than just martial arts. The coaches are so patient with these boys and girls, taking time to teach them each move thoroughly. In addition our son has made so made great friends while training. He loves it so much & plans to continue training into adulthood.

3. House of Jiu-Jitsu

Address: 823 South Laredo Street
Contact: +1 210-386-0780 | [email protected]
Hours:
- Monday – Friday: 6:00 AM – 9:30 PM
- Saturday: 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
- Sunday: 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM
Jumping straight into advanced sparring can be intimidating, and House of Jiu-Jitsu addresses that head-on with a structured five-week beginner onboarding program.
Completing the fundamentals track before joining regular classes ensures newcomers build a solid base, which is a huge confidence booster.
They focus on serious competitors, offering a fight team pathway and free training for active pro fighters.
The facility also features a convenient on-site shop for purchasing premium gear. While the introductory track is excellent for building a solid base, the restricted initial access might frustrate experienced practitioners who just want to jump into regular classes.
Plus, the beginner program automatically rolls into a standard membership, so you’ll need to actively cancel if you decide not to continue.
For those committed to learning properly, this structured approach is highly effective.

Great Gym. Have been at this gym for over 3 years. Very personable and supportive of those training on the mats and shows support for students off the mats. Professor Jacob is very knowledgeable with great instructors under him. Very humble guy. I recommend coming and trying out at least 1 class. Something for everyone, kids and adults. The vibes are unmatched and Veteran friendly.

4. Karate International San Antonio & AForce Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Contact: +1 210-585-3433 | [email protected]
Hours: Monday – Friday: 3:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Parents will value a program that combines physical skills with mental discipline. This school actively promotes screen-free summer camps and age-based segmentation, ensuring children learn in an appropriate environment.
Families I spoke with appreciated that parents don’t need to stay, allowing time for errands. The creative, engaging curriculum shares a similar educational philosophy to what you might find at the best art schools in San Antonio.
Another thing is that the instructors welcome uncoordinated beginners and focus solely on self-defense fundamentals. Because of this non-competitive focus, advanced practitioners seeking intense tournament preparation might find the curriculum lacking.
Plus, their training area is somewhat small, which limits class size capacity and availability during peak hours.

Kids come home happy and exhausted!
Best summer camp for your money! Camp counselors (and plenty of them) keep the kids active and well supervised. So many special activities like bringing in large inflatables, petting zoos, and games. Kids come home happy and exhausted ! Thank you! Best summer ever!

5. Dragon Martial Arts

Training under a direct lineage to Grandmaster Ip Man is a rare opportunity, especially at a facility established in 1983. Dragon Martial Arts stands as the oldest Wing Chun school in the area, offering decades of stability and historical expertise.
Classes are led by head instructor Sifu Gilbert Leal, who brings 50 years of experience. Because this specific system relies on technique and structural leverage rather than brute strength, it is highly accessible for individuals of all sizes.
The pricing is remarkably affordable for families wanting to train together. The major drawback is their schedule, as the facility is completely closed on Fridays and Sundays.
They also operate on very narrow evening hours, offering zero flexibility for those who prefer to exercise in the early mornings.

My son loves it
I have wondered for the last 10 years if there was a wing chun school here in SA, and turns out there are several. The Sifu here is the real deal, and he is the original wing chun master here in SA, the other school descended from him. My son loves it and I plan to join one day as well.

He is a great teacher
Sifu Gilbert is a true martial artist and very well rounded. He understands how other martialarts works and teaches adaptable wing chun. I started my martial arts journey with Sifu and I am now a muay thai fighter. He is a great teacher and I I highly recommend training under him.
