When “Working It Out” Isn’t Working Anymore: The 5 Best Marriage Counseling Services in San Antonio

best-marriage-counseling-san-antonio
We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Therapeutic Approach: Examining the methods each clinic uses was our first step. Practices relying on proven science stood out, ensuring you receive effective help.

Specialized Expertise: General therapy provides a solid foundation, yet relationship repair demands targeted expertise. Counselors who focus deeply on couples and trust rebuilding took priority during our search.

Accessibility and Scheduling: Flexible options matter immensely when trying to fit appointments into an already packed calendar. Clinics offering telehealth sessions or extended evening hours scored higher for accommodating demanding routines.

Pricing Transparency: Clear upfront rates provide necessary peace of mind because therapy represents a significant financial investment. Practices that openly share their pricing models earned their spot on this list by eliminating the stress of unexpected bills.

Admitting that you can’t fix your relationship on your own is incredibly tough. You’ve probably spent months (or years) trying to “work it out,”  only to end up having the same argument on a loop.

When you reach that point of feeling completely stuck, the last thing you want to do is spend hours vetting therapists while hoping you don’t pick the wrong one. This search is vulnerable and draining.

Rebuilding your connection takes serious effort, and finding the right guide shouldn’t be another hurdle.

To help you out, we waded through the options, looking closely at therapeutic approaches, flexibility, and real patient feedback.

Read on for the best marriage counseling services in San Antonio that can help you move forward together.

1. Balanced Counseling of San Antonio

Website: https://www.balancedcounselingsa.com/
Address: 7272 Wurzbach Road, Suite 203
Contact: (210) 980-6002 | (210) 941-0886 (Fax) | [email protected]
Schedule:

  • Mon-Fri 8:00 AM – 7:00 PM
  • Sat 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
  • After Hours By Request

Balanced Counseling shapes evidence-based therapy around your specific relationship dynamics instead of relying on a standard playbook.

Their team relies on goal-oriented methods like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to improve your communication and untangle recurring arguments.

A couple I know worked through heavy trust issues here, leaving each session feeling deeply heard and understood by their counselor.

Finding immediate availability for a bilingual therapist required some schedule shuffling, though. From what I’ve seen, booking times with their independent practitioners demands flexibility (and some patience).

Conveniently, virtual telehealth sessions bridge the gap when a busy workday means you cannot make the drive to the clinic. Just keep a close eye on your calendar to manage their strict 48-hour cancellation policy and avoid unexpected fees.

Pros

  • Tailored therapy approach
  • Specialized in couples counseling
  • Flexible telehealth options
  • Diverse bilingual team

Cons

  • Varied therapist availability
  • Strict 48-hour cancellation policy

Customer Reviews

Helped heal my marriage over the past several months
Alison and Balanced Consulting have helped heal my marriage over the past several months. Her approach is just right for us – pragmatic, supportive, and frank. We both feel heard during our sessions and now have a much healthier approach to communicating about tough issues. We highly recommend her.

Highly recommend it to anyone
I followed a therapist to this practice because she is so understanding and helpful. I have always felt empowered and challenged to become a better version of myself after each visit. My family has benefited from the help I receive as well. This practice is a lifesaver for parents, marriage and those who suffer from mental health issues. I would highly recommend it to anyone seeking to better themselves or just to be heard.

2. Marney W. DeFoore

marney-w-defoore

Website: https://www.marneydefoore.com/
Address: 4241 Woodcock Drive, Suite C110
Contact: (210) 883-7877
Schedule: Mon-Fri 9:30 AM – 2:30 PM

Marney DeFoore brings four decades of clinical experience to his practice, offering a seasoned perspective that only comes from helping couples since 1983.

Because he has worked through nearly every imaginable relationship struggle, he focuses on an “Intensive” approach rather than just managing a temporary crisis.

This roadmap helps you navigate complicated life events while building the skills needed to avoid falling back into old patterns.

I also like how his method combines professional coaching with traditional counseling. This is especially great for small business owners navigating the intersection of work and home life.

However, his schedule is limited, with appointments ending by mid-afternoon and no sessions available on weekends.

It’s also worth noting that all sessions are now held exclusively via telehealth. Though convenient for those who want remote support, it won’t suit couples seeking an in-person office setting.

Pros

  • Over 40 years of experience
  • Dual counseling and coaching
  • Insurance flexibility available
  • Intensive breakthrough sessions

Cons

  • No evening or weekend availability
  • Exclusively virtual sessions
  • Very limited daily hours

Customer Reviews

Highly recommend his services!
I received clinical supervision from Marney and had a wonderful experience. He is kind, generous with his time and knowledge, and provided really valuable guidance. Working with him gave me both clinical direction and also practical business guidance as a young professional trying to move into the world of private practice. Highly recommend his services!

Cannot recommend Mr. DeFoore enough!!!
My husband and I are eternally grateful to Mr. Marney DeFoore! He helped us work through some challenges we faced during our first year of marriage. What makes Mr. DeFoore so unique is that he gives his patients a set of “tools” to utilize in their relationships that will last a lifetime. Long after my husband and I finished our weekly meetings with Mr. DeFoore, we continue to refer back to his “toolkit” in order to better communicate with one another. He also is a true Christian counselor. Everything he teaches is biblically-based. I cannot recommend Mr. DeFoore enough!!!

Website: https://www.thebestmarriage.com/
Address: 18834 Stone Oak Parkway, Suite 104
Contact: (210) 849-7264
Schedule:

  • Mon-Thurs 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM
  • Fri 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM

Charles Coulter Counseling focuses heavily on deep relationship trauma, specifically addiction recovery and affair healing.

I’ve found that Charles draws on over twenty years of clinical experience to guide partners through the slow, complex process of rebuilding trust.

Beyond couples, the practice also helps families navigate parenting hurdles and teen behavioral issues.

I like that they use a transparent, tiered pricing structure, which lets you choose a counselor whose rates fit your budget. You can also start with a free fifteen-minute phone consultation to see if the fit is right before paying for a full session.

Just keep in mind that the clinic is strictly an out-of-network provider. This means you’ll need to pay upfront and handle your own reimbursement paperwork if you plan to use your coverage.

Pros

  • Niche affair recovery focus
  • Clear tiered pricing structure
  • Free 15-minute consultation
  • Optional faith-based integration

Cons

  • Out-of-network for insurance
  • Strict 48-hour cancellation

Customer Reviews

Truly helped save my marriage
I have seen Charles for a few years now. I highly recommend him I started with marriage counseling that truly helped save my marriage. I have been seeing him for family and personal issues as well. He has helped guide me through some tough times and healing.

He has positively amended our marriage 180 degrees
Charles is second to none. My husband and I have been through 2 counselors prior to meeting Charles (due to others being one sided or feeling a sense of bias). He has positively amended our marriage 180 degrees. I have started to see him on my own, in addition to our maintenance marriage counseling, and it has transformed my daily life and has truly brought clarity and peace to my soul. I will continue to recommend all of my family and friends to him. I will forever be grateful for his life changing teachings.

4. Align Couples Therapy

align-couples-therapy

Website: https://www.krista-j-miller.com/
Address: 16607 Blanco Road, Suite 701
Contact: (210) 526-2050
Schedule:

  • Mon-Fri 8:00 AM – 9:00 PM
  • Sat-Sun Varies by Clinician
  • Marriage Intensives By Appointment Only

Align Couples Therapy uses science-based methodologies like the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). With these, they can prioritize objective assessments over guesswork.

Before traditional therapy even begins, however, the practice requires a rigorous four-session intake period. Their rates are also higher than those of their other counterparts in the area.

On the bright side, their meticulous approach in the intake quickly highlights communication gaps that might otherwise take months to identify.

Once their assessment is complete, founder Krista Miller and her team focus on giving you tailored, actionable tools to practice intimacy at home between office visits.

If your calendar is simply too chaotic for weekly appointments, they also offer intensive marathon weekends to help you dive deep into your relationship dynamics all at once.

Pros

  • Science-based methodologies
  • Extended operating hours
  • Actionable home exercises
  • Transparent tiered pricing

Cons

  • Heavy upfront time commitment
  • Strict clinical screening process

Customer Reviews

Sensitive to the challenges that couples face day in and day out
Krista is a thoughtful and innovative couples therapist. She understands the complexity of relationships and is sensitive to the challenges that couples face day in and day out. She’s committed to her work and helping couples find joy and purpose. I refer to her with confidence and respect.

Hands down the best couples program available
Krista is incredibly knowledgeable and proficient in the Gottman method, which is hands down the best couples program available. My marriage was saved because of it, but it’s not an easy process and you have to be open and willing to do a lot of self reflection and work towards personal growth, which is hard and sometimes scary work. Krista has always treated me and my husband with kindness, empathy, and a gentle compassion which is critical when helping people manage big feelings. I recommend her to my friends frequently.

I like the clear, upfront pricing here. Plus, they have virtual telehealth sessions to help couples confidently plan their care without financial surprises.

It’s just disappointed that they’re closed on Wednesdays and weekends. Plus, you’ll also navigate a strict 24-hour cancellation policy, which requires you to pay the full session fee if you miss the window to reschedule.

I would definitely recommend to anyone seeking relationship counseling
Mrs. Bauer is a great resource to help you grow in both your relationships and personally. She provides a lot of great resources and advice, and I would definitely recommend to anyone seeking relationship counseling or personal growth.

Even if you don’t think you “need” it, you might be surprised
High recommend. Even if you don’t think you “need” it, you might be surprised at what you learn. Easy conversations around challenging issues. Fortunately, Tracy walks you through with skill, science, and life experience. While being a guide, she also educates. Teaches you to fish. Allows for continued success without a price tag. Very pleasant environment and engagement.
